When I started my studies in the Graduate Gemologist program at the Gemological Institute of America, I was very fortunate to have found a master gemologist appraiser who not only allowed me to "look over her shoulder" as an apprentice, but also provided insight, guidance, and friendship. Deciding appraising was not what I wanted to do; I established Touch of Class Jewelry Sales in 1996 and began selling and repairing jewelry for friends, relatives and referrals. In 2006 I established JH Designs and entered one of my first pieces in the AGTA Spectrum Awards.
I have learned that design cannot be forced. Designs usually hit me at a random moment or in the middle of the night; anytime I try too hard to force it, I hate what I come up with and the design is quickly trashed. My designs begin as doodles, doodles turn into sketches, sketches into drafts etc. Frequently, I design a piece around a specific stone.
My designs are about motion and balance and the finished piece must reflect that. I work with an exceptional Master Goldsmith and Platinum smith who understands what I want the piece to reflect. My pieces are hand forged not cast or molded to achieve the synergy of design and workmanship.
